As news of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuwade demise continues to circulate, his subjects, admirers and others across the country have thronged his palace as to mourn his passing.

I promise to pay backlog of salaries – Aregbesola

Governor Rauf Aregbesola of Osun has promised to pay the backlog of salaries owed civil servants.

This promise was contained in a statement issued by the governor’s media aide, Mr Semiu Okanlawon, in Osogbo on Wednesday.

The statement said Aregbesola made the promise when Ijesa Society, a social group, visited him.

Aregbesola, according to the statement, expresses his displeasure over the delay in payment of workers’ salaries.

The statement said every government initiative in the state represented the fulfillment of campaign promises made to the people.

“The visit of the group comes at a time when some people are being sponsored to rubbish my achievements,” Aregbesola is quoted as saying in the statement.

President of the group, Chief Tunde Aluko, commended Aregbesola for rapid development of the state.

Aluko expressed belief that the financial challenge confronting the state will soon be over.

India set to overtake China as most populous country – UN

 

United Nations World Population Prospects report said on Wednesday that India would in six years sooner than previously forecast overtake China and become the world’s most populous country.

John Wilmoth, Head of the UN Population division said in New York, that the report indicated that Nigeria was on course to outstrip the US by 2050 to become the third largest population.

He said that the current global population of 7.3 billion was forecast to reach 9.7 billion in 2050 and 11.2 billion in 2100, slightly above the last set of UN projections.

Wilmoth said that most growth would happen in developing regions, particularly Africa.

He said that the demographic forecasts were crucial for designing and implementing the new global development goals being launched later in 2015 to replace the Millennium Development Goals.

“The concentration of growth in the poorest countries will make it harder to eradicate poverty, combat hunger and expand schooling and health systems.

American actor, Morgan Freeman has revealed he’s not worried about dying. The 78-year-old actor realises he’s approaching the end of his life but has no plans to retire from making movies as he thinks passing away on the job just like comedian, Dick Shaw, who had a heart attack on stage in 1987, would be the perfect way to go. In an interview with The Daily Telegraph newspaper, he said: ‘He (Dick) dropped dead and he got a laugh! You couldn’t dream of a better way to go. I’m not worried about anything.’ Freeman is currently limiting the work he takes on but has no intentions to swap the big screen for the stage or TV. He added: ‘I will never set foot on anybody’s live stage again. Two months into performances we would go on stage, look at each other and go, ‘What the f**k are we doing here...

Kazeem Olajide poisons his baby in attempt to divorce wife

  

A 41-day-old baby, Zainab Olajide, has died after she was allegedly poisoned by her father, Kazeem Olajide, in a desperate attempt to divorce his wife.
The incident happened at about 7am on Friday in the Lemode area of Ogun State.
According to Punch,the mother, Abosede Ogundare, had left Zainab with Kazeem to sweep the compound only to come back and met the baby with foams gushing out from her mouth.
It was learnt that Ogundare alerted neighbours to the incident having found a bottle containing pesticide with her husband.
